The Benefits of Joining a Car Club

There’s nothing quite like being with people who share your interests. If your interest lies in the rumbling of engines and different automotives, a car club can definitely give you a sense of community to belong to.

A car club is characterised as a community of car enthusiasts who share the same interest in car-related things. It may be focused on car type or manufacturer (such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen, etc.), on a make or model (such as RS2, M3, 911, etc.) or on purpose (such as cars for showing, for competing or for driving). Car clubs may pick just one specialty to focus on or may generalise, accepting members with various car makes or models.

Car clubs usually come with a membership fee that gives their members various club benefits to enjoy. Car clubs also host various meetings and events that allow members to openly enjoy and share their love for vehicles.

Being a member of a car club offers many benefits. Some of these benefits include:

Ability to register a vehicle registration under the Club Permit Scheme

For a reduced fee, owners of historic vehicles that are 25 years and older can drive their vehicles for 45 or 90 days per year under VicRoads Club Permit Scheme. Only registered car clubs are allowed to issue Club Permits, provided that the vehicle’s age and roadworthiness are proven. If you are a Club Permit holder, just remember to log an entry in your logbook each time you drive the historic vehicle to avoid a fine.

Access to publications, newsletters & social media

Car clubs traditionally publish a magazine, whether annually, bi-annually, quarterly or monthly. These magazines, which can be distributed in hardcopy or via email, feature automotive articles, event coverage and other relevant information for car enthusiasts. This also applies for newsletters, as well as other club collaterals that the club uses to communicate with members. Some clubs are also building a solid online and social media presence.

Invitation to club meetings

In essence, car clubs are hubs for socialising and interaction. Meetings can range from official meetings to larger events, like race days or fundraising events. Club meetings are a fantastic opportunity for club members to connect with one another and share their interests about everything automotive!

Access to club merchandise & industry discounts

Car clubs offer special club merchandise that is often exclusive for club members alone. This merchandise is also often offered at a discounted price. A car club membership provides awesome perks such as discounts and special deals on a wide range of services and products within the automotive and motorsport industry.

Driver training

CAMS-affiliated car clubs allow members access to racing licenses and official training. Some clubs also run driver training programs year-long to assist members in gaining advanced skills.

Access to motorsport events

Motorsport Australia-affiliated car clubs help their members take their first step into motorsport. Club members can then participate in exclusive events such as motorkhana, hill climbs and track days.

Access to club car shows

Car shows are a great way for members to show off their cars to the general public, from current models to the classics. Car shows allow people to view a wide variety of cars as well as socialise with other passionate car enthusiasts and experts.

Organising club runs

Club runs constitute anything from a one day run, a breakfast run, a short run followed by lunch, a weekend away or a longer run over several days. Club runs are often taken on scenic, quieter roads and may involve a visit to an interesting site, historic house or vineyard. There might also be a stop for breakfast or lunch. Some runs include a competitive element such as navigation, observation or estimation.

The dangers of shopping on price

Maintaining a vehicle can be costly, so looking for the best deals is normal. When a better alternative is presented, we often tend to choose it. In fact, this is how we have gained some of our most loyal customers, as we deliver great service at a very good price! However there are times when a deal looms too good to be true, and sometimes sadly people discover this the hard way. The truth is you do get what you pay for.

Most car service and repair invoices can be divided into “Parts” and “Labour”. When you come across a deal offering the same repair for half the price, it could be that they’re either not using genuine or OEM parts, or they haven’t spent as much time as necessary on the car. Either way, your vehicle may suffer more problems down the line if this has happened, ultimately costing you more money than if you decided to go somewhere more reliable in the first place.

Avoid Price Shock - Get A Written Quote

Before getting your car serviced, ask for a written estimate that details exactly what work needs to be done, which parts need to be changed or supplied, how long the servicing will take and how much the labour will cost.

Aside from the original assessment, the mechanic might also diagnose other intermittent faults before starting repairs. Understandably these might not have been included in the original estimate. To avoid any unwanted surprises, make it clear that you would like your mechanic to contact you if any other work needs to be included that goes beyond the original estimate, so that there is clear communication around what is going to be spent and how much time it will take.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask your mechanic to keep you in the loop with future work so that you can both outline and agree on a clear maintenance plan.

Repair Charges: Unlocking the Mystery

Before having any work performed on your vehicle, we recommend that you ask your local mechanic how they price their services. Some businesses charge a flat rate on car repairs while others charge based on the hours spent working on the vehicle. One thing to also keep in mind is that most workshops also charge for diagnostic assessments even if you end up not going ahead with the service.

What should I know about the parts to be repaired or replaced?

Mechanics use different tools and parts to repair cars. Parts can be classified as:

  • New parts- parts that are generally made to original manufacturer’s specifications, either by OEM, or by an independent company
  • Remanufactured, rebuilt and reconditioned parts-  old parts that have been restored to good working condition
  • Salvaged parts- the parts that were taken from another vehicle without alteration

We highly recommend that you make sure that your mechanic is only using genuine or OEM parts. This will ensure that the repair is reliable and that your car’s warranty is protected.

What Do I Need Post Service or Repair?

After each service, make sure that the invoice issued lists each individual component of the repair. This means a complete list of each repair, which parts have been supplied and the cost of each part, as well as the labour charges.

The biggest mistakes people make washing their own cars

There’s no better feeling than seeing our cars shine and sparkle after a thorough, deep, professional clean. However, for when life gets in the way, an effective wash at home can be just as good as long as we avoid making a few common mistakes.

For a seamless at home wash, here are the biggest mistakes to look out for to minimise the risk of damaging your car’s final look with streaks, smears and even scratches:

1. THINKING IT’S OKAY TO WASH YOUR CAR WITH DISHWASHING LIQUID

As straightforward as it sounds, you should not use dishwashing liquid on your car. This is because it is not PH neutral so it can be damaging to your car’s paintwork. To take care of your car and give it a satisfying shine, use only a proper, good quality wash and wax.

2. CLEANING FROM THE TOP AND FORGETTING THE WHEELS

The wheels and tyres are the dirtiest parts of the car which is why a good rule of thumb we go by is to wash these parts first. Once these parts are sparkling, you can then go to the top and work your way down. Just be sure to change the sponge and water before you get to the rest of the car. By doing so, you avoid transferring the grit and rocks from your tyres and wheels over your car’s paintwork, which is damaging.

3. USING ONLY ONE SPONGE FOR EVERYTHING

You should always change the sponges and water when moving from the wheels to other areas of your car. This is because it’s so difficult to remove the dirt that gets caught in the sponge. So when you’re cleaning your car, we recommend having several sponges on hand as well as a few buckets of water. For the best results, use a wheel cleaner brush to more effectively remove dirt and grit from your tyres, and a gentle wash mitt or sponge for the rest of your car.

4. DRYING YOUR CAR WITH A DIRTY OLD BEACH TOWEL

It’s important to dry your car properly to avoid a spotty or smeared finish. You should use a chamois or a multipurpose microfiber drying towel to give you that fresh, spot-free finish. Both options are very absorbent and will prevent your car from drying with water marks.

5. POURING WAX OR POLISH DIRECTLY ONTO YOUR CAR

To get the best results, you should always apply wax and polish onto a mitt or cloth instead of pouring it directly onto your car. We recommend using a high-performance wax and polish to preserve your car’s sheen. Before waxing or polishing your car, make sure that your car is dry, as even a small amount of moisture can prevent the wax from evenly bonding with your car’s finish.

6. USING DOMESTIC GLASS CLEANERS ON YOUR WINDSCREEN

Windscreens are exposed to more dust and dirt than your household windows. This is why they need something stronger. Your typical gentle household cleaner will simply not cut through such dirt and grime in the same way that a specialised glass cleaner will. With a specialised glass cleaner, your windscreen will be cleared of the toughest dirt, while leaving a sparkly, streak-free finish!

7. NEGLECTING YOUR LEATHER INTERIOR

The interior of your car is just as important as its exterior, so you should also pay attention to keeping it in pristine condition. Use special protectants to keep your leather seats spotless and free of both stains and UV damage. When cleaning and applying leather protectants, use a microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the surface.

The Benefits of Using Quality Parts

Proper maintenance is essential in keeping your car running reliably and well. But so is using genuine or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Regardless of the type of servicing your car requires, it’s wise to use genuine or OEM parts to keep your car running as the manufacturers intended.

In case you are unaware, the term OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, and so OEM parts are those produced by a manufacturer for their vehicles. When you use genuine OEM parts, your car’s warranty is preserved while also extending the vehicle’s service life. Compared to cheaper parts, genuine and OEM parts are generally of a higher quality, making driving your car safer and smoother.

Here are a few reasons why you should definitely not overlook using high quality and genuine OEM parts for the maintenance and upkeep of your vehicle:

  • The quality of raw materials used in genuine and OEM parts is significantly better than aftermarket parts. The quality and cleanliness of the steel significantly affects the quality and reliability of the end product. Aftermarket parts, manufactured using lower quality steel, degrade faster and often don’t last as long as genuine OEM parts made with higher quality metals.

  • Non OEM part manufacturers may cut corners on the level of quality of other materials used in production. This typically occurs because they want to increase the quantity of products produced to sell more without having to increase production costs. This is often seen where manufacturers use lower quality plastics and seal materials. But by compromising on the quality, the material used can cause early seal failure, leading to far bigger damage to your vehicle.

  • Economy manufacturers may use lower-grade lubricants. Lubrication is important in reducing friction between car components, as well as preventing corrosion and stabilising structures. However, the use of low quality lubrication leads to increased operating temperatures, shortening the component’s service life as well.

  • Aftermarket and economy manufacturers use lower quality levels in the engineering and manufacturing processes. Manufacturing parts involve many processes such as forging, turning, heat-treating, grinding and polishing. Genuine and OEM parts are manufactured under rigorous production standards to ensure longevity and quality. As an example, precision heat-treating may be used to achieve the perfect balance of hardness and durability. On the other hand, with economy parts, there is no guarantee that such high production standards are upheld. Economy manufacturers may use lower levels of processes to cut costs and save time, so the products end up being more brittle and less able to withstand constant wear and tear.

  • Genuine and OEM parts manufacturing involves additional inspections to ensure safety. Additional inspections are performed at various stages to ensure that the final parts are up to product specifications and standards. However, economy manufacturers often pass over these extra steps to shorten the production time and lower costs.

In between servicing: Home maintenance

Maintaining the condition and reliability of your vehicle is important. The best way you can ensure that your prestige auto continues to run well and with minimum fuss is by servicing it regularly. However, there are also a few things you can do in-between servicing to ensure your vehicle is running smoothly:

  • Check the engine oil level and top the car up with oil as required; running your car with a low engine oil level can potentially damage the engine and lead to costly repairs. So it’s important that your engine oil level is always at the appropriate mark.
  • Check radiator coolant / water levels in the radiator and top up if needed; the role of the car’s coolant is to prevent your engine from overheating. Checking the coolant levels is important, as running your car with low coolant levels is damaging to the engine.
  • Check power steering fluid and top up if necessary; if your steering wheel feels heavy or is difficult to turn, it might be a sign that you need to top up your power steering fluid.
  • Check windscreen washer fluid and top up as required; a relatively easy task. Consult your cars user manual for instructions if unsure.
  • Check your garage floor for marks, stains or fluids as these may indicate leaks in the fuel or coolant systems or the engine; checking the floor for signs of leaks can help you determine that you may have an underlying issue with your car’s internal components. If you notice something, it’s suggested to then get it checked by your mechanic sooner, rather than later.

Topping up fluids is relatively easy however it’s important to use the correct product for your vehicle. Always consult your cars user manual prior to prior to purchasing any product.

As well as maintaining the drivability of your vehicle, keeping an eye on fluid levels can also mean that potential problems don’t go unnoticed. If you notice your vehicle is continually running low on any particular fluid it may be a symptom of a more serious issue and you should bring your car in for inspection.

  • Check the windshield for chips; a small chip can easily lead to a full-blown crack. A cracked windscreen is unsafe and can affect the roadworthiness of your vehicle. So it’s better to attend to chips as soon they occur. It’s much cheaper and easier to repair a chip than to replace a cracked windscreen.
  • Check headlights, tail lights and indicators regularly; headlights, tail lights and indicators are important when it comes to keeping you and others safe when driving.
  • Replace blown fuses; a relatively easy task. Consult your cars user manual for instructions if unsure.
  • Check tyre tread for low tread or uneven wear and replace tyres as necessary; driving with worn tyres makes it difficult to maintain the correct level of grip on the road surface, leading to unsafe driving conditions. Apart from being unsafe, worn tyres can also affect the road worthiness of your vehicle.
  • Check tyre pressure and top up air in tyres; maintaining the correct tyre pressure increases fuel economy and ensures your car holds safely to the road. For a precise reading use a pressure gauge, available at most petrol stations. Custom and performance tyres will have specific tyre pressure requirements, however for most cars standard cars on the road a tyre pressure of between 34-36 PSI is sufficient.

While the above listed suggestions and home maintenance tips will assist with the smooth operation of your car in between servicing, things can still malfunction. If you encounter any of the following warning signs you should bring your car in for inspection:

  • You hear unusual noises
  • You feel unusual vibrations
  • A dashboard warning light remains on
  • The oil pressure gauge reads low
  • The temperature gauge reads hot
  • The car has a tendency to wander or steer to one side
  • You experience any abnormalities when braking
  • The car uses more fuel or oil than usual
  • The car is difficult to start
  • The car is running roughly
  • The car leaves oil or coolant on the driveway
  • The car has a smoky exhaust

The Benefits of Regular Servicing

Having your car serviced regularly may sometimes seem unnecessary. But regular servicing can save you from bigger expenses later. A good ‘rule of thumb’ for servicing is once every 12 months.

Here are some of the benefits that arise from having your car regularly serviced by trusted and professional mechanics.

Improved performance

Regular servicing ensures the vehicle will maintain optimum performance. When oils become old and stale they lose viscosity and their ability to lubricate parts. An inferior oil creates wear on engine components and stale, old oils carry impurities which can damage internal mechanisms directly affecting the performance of the vehicle.

Improved safety

Regular servicing will maintain the overall health of your vehicle ensuring your car will be able to run smoothly, reducing the risk of failure on the road. Faulty brakes and steering systems, tyre problems, damaged fuel filters and clogged air and cabin filters can all be avoided if you make sure to frequently service your vehicle.

Lower risk of malfunction

A vehicle that has not been serviced properly as often as needed is more likely to suffer roadside emergencies than one that is regularly brought to the mechanic. By regularly caring for and servicing your car, you automatically lower the risk of malfunction.

Improved fuel efficiency

A regularly serviced car will often avoid issues that can lead to poor economy. Servicing often can make sense at the bower too!

Prolong your car’s life

Just like the human body, your car needs its maintenance checks to keep it in great shape. Regular servicing gives you the benefit of prolonging your car’s service life, as it remains in top condition.

Maintain resale value

Should you decide to sell your car, a complete service record will help the process by appealing to buyers who do their research. A potential buyer will look at your cars condition together with it’s maintenance record, increasing the likelihood of finalising a deal.

Technology in the workshop

When it comes to caring for and maintaining your car, it’s important that you choose the best service provider to keep it in top-notch condition. Excellent automotive servicing begins with a mechanic’s ability to identify your car’s problems and solve them efficiently. This requires the workshop being decked out with the latest automotive diagnostic software and scanning technology and equipment.

Keeping up with technological advancements in the industry allows your mechanic to comprehensively service your car according to the manufacturer’s specifications ensuring you preserve your car’s warranty. Newer car models can especially benefit from this advanced technology for a more seamless repair process.

These days modern cars will detect faults with your vehicle before you’re even aware of them and will notify you of these faults via your dashboard indicator lights. These indicator lights form part of your cars on-board diagnostics system (OBD). Originally designed for reducing emissions, modern OBD systems monitor the performance of your vehicle and notify you when things go wrong or need attention.

The first generation of OBD systems, referred to as the OBD-I, were developed in the 1980s. With this version, the malfunction indicator would light up whenever a problem arised, even if no specifics were given. Additionally, the OBD-I used various proprietary connectors and hardware interfaces. The mechanic would need to get specific tools for different vehicle models in order to access the diagnostic information.

We’ve come a long way from the OBD-I. Modern vehicles are typically compliant with OBD-II systems that require them to use a standard diagnostic connector (SAE J1962). DTCs, also called OBD-II codes, help your mechanic quickly identify your car’s problems and speed up the repair process.

Here at German Auto Haus, we use a comprehensive range of the latest diagnostic tools to analyse your car’s repair needs. Our specialists have access to all of the diagnostic information and solutions that a brand name dealership has. We can perform updates for your car as well as provide your car with service and repairs as per manufacturer’s specification.

Dealer Alternative

Maintaining your luxury car means that you need to choose the best service available. A common misconception is that to service and adequately care for your vehicle, you need to do so through the original car dealership. This is simply not true. Under the Trade Practices Act you have the right to pick a service provider of your choice. And according to the ACCC law, a car warranty will remain valid if you follow the three main conditions:

  1. Qualified staff: You can also have your car serviced by a non-dealer qualified mechanic during the warranty period.
  2. Manufacturer’s specifications: You do need to get the services done at the recommended times in the logbook.
  3. Fit for the purpose: The parts used do not need to be genuine parts but must be the correct part for the job.

So, if you’re after a quality service you can rest assured knowing that there are dealer alternatives available. Here are some of the upsides of choosing a dealer alternative to service your car.

Warranty maintenance

Contrary to popular belief, repairing and servicing your car at a dealer alternative will not void your warranty. In fact, it is a standard warranty condition that dealerships cannot specify that your car must be serviced by them. That said, if you do choose a dealer alternative, be sure to remember to check that your mechanic is using genuine or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts to preserve your warranty.

OEM parts refer to parts made by the car manufacturer themselves, or by an external company according to the car manufacturer’s specifications. Here at German Auto Haus, we are proud to use only the best original and OEM parts for repair and maintenance services for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen cars, all in line with manufacturer specifications. The parts we supply are always of the highest stand and will never void your warranty.

Updated diagnostic and repair equipment

Any trusted automotive repairer will have the latest diagnostic and repair equipment and technology available to provide the same high-quality service as the dealerships. This includes having the proper tools to service the latest line of prestige cars. We at German Auto Haus are well-equipped with the latest diagnostic and scanning equipment and technology enabling us to identify and fix any problem your vehicle might have and help ensure your vehicle is performing as you would like it to. In addition, we work closely with established enthusiast car clubs and know just what works best for owners with different requirements.

German Auto Haus: A COVID-Safe Business

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only impacted the way we travel and socialise, but also how we keep our vehicles maintained. In the pre-COVID world, servicing your car was as easy as dropping by your preferred service centre and leaving it to the professionals to work their magic. But with the health risks imposed by the pandemic, stricter measures need to be implemented.

At German Auto Haus we have adopted stringent protocols for cleanliness and hygiene to ensure our customers’ health and safety is assured at all times and at all stages during the servicing process.

Some of the measures we’ve put in place include the following:

COVID Safe Plan

Whilst not mandatory for our business, we have implemented a comprehensive COVIDSafe Plan to ensure we are operating within the Victorian Government CovidSafe Guidelines for Victorian small businesses.

QR Code

Whilst not mandatory for our business and optional for our customers, we have a QR Code available for scanning should customers require. The QR Code system will help contact tracers identify visitors to our business in the event a positive case of COVID-19 is identified within the Richmond area.

Social distancing

We’ve restricted public access to our workshop and have limited the number of customers allowed inside our reception area at any one time. We require our staff to wear disposable gloves and face masks and to practice social distancing. In addition, our staff are encouraged not to sign delivery receipts and have staggered lunch breaks to limit the number of people in the tea room at any one time.

Workshop and reception hygiene

To abide by the high COVID-19 sanitation standards, we clean all high-traffic areas and high contact points in our workshop, parts room, rest rooms and reception area every day. We also disinfect these areas after each use, so our customers can enjoy well-sanitised facilities at all times. In addition we have hand santitiser and face masks available for customers in reception.

'No Contact' and 'Concierge' services

To further minimise face-to-face interaction and help with social distancing, we are offering our customers ‘No Contact’ and ‘Concierge’ services. Our in-house ‘No Contact’ service minimises face-to-face interaction is available for customers who wish to bring their car into the workshop yet would prefer to avoid contact. Our ‘Concierge’ service helps with social distancing is available for customers not able to make it to our workshop if they are self-isolating or working from home. For customers utilising our ‘Concierge’ service we will pick up the car from their home or workplace and deliver it back to them after servicing. Both services include complimentary wash, vacuum and vehicle sanitation.

Vehicle Sanitation

To ensure both our customers safety and ours, we sanitise every vehicle twice. First when we receive the car, and again prior to handing the car back to the customer. All the main touch points and high contact areas inside the vehicle are sanitised, including the external door handles and car keys. Once sanitised we cover the main contact points (steering wheel, gear stick, hand brake and drivers seat) with protective covers. These covers remain in place for the duration of the service. Once servicing is completed, we remove all protective coverings, wash and vacuum the vehicle and give it a final sanitation prior to returning to the customer. For more details on our vehicle sanitation process and what is involved, click on the below image to view our 'Vehicle Sanitation Video':
